The Near-1600 Dry/wet Knock-out: Linking Terrestrial and Near-shore Ecosystems

چکیده
We present here a series of sediment mass accumulation rate (MAR) for the Santa Barbara Basin, California. The 1117-1992 series was computed from varve thickness and water content to account for the compaction trend. Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) was employed to investigate multi-annual oscillations, as was previously done on varve thickness alone (Biondi et al. 1997). Singular spectrum analysis revealed the same major oscillations identified in varve thickness, with periods of ~58, ~26.5, and ~12 years. The amplitude of those oscillations increased after 1600, and remained high for the following two centuries. Based on recent evidence that significant landscape changes can occur after periods of severe drought, it is possible that the late 1500s drought disrupted vegetation cover over large areas, allowing for major erosion during floods in the following years. The large influx of sediments and organic carbon to the near-shore basins could then have altered the structure of their sedimentary record for many years to follow.

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Deionized Water on Surface Roughness of Near Dry Electro Discharge Machining of AISI D2 Steel
The electro discharge machining (EDM), one of the methods used in the machining industry and a non-traditional manufacturing method, the electro erosion process does not depend on the hardness of material and offers a way to process materials of very complex geometry with very fine and high precision by using cheap electrode materials, which make it a preferred method. In this study, effect of ...

متن کاملCharacteristics and energetic strategies of the rhizosphere in ecosystems of the Bornhöved Lake district
This paper reviews investigations on interactions between soil microbiota, and plants during the interdisciplinary program ‘Ecosystem research in the Bornhöved Lake district’; it deals with processes associated with the rhizosphere at four agricultural, and forest ecosystems. Emphasis was placed on a black alder forest representing the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In th...
متن کاملBacterial community composition in costal dunes of the Mediterranean along a gradient from the sea shore to the inland
Sand dunes are unique ecosystems with distinct features which limited the accumulation of biomass. The distance from seashore affects both the physical properties of the sand dunes and the biota living above- and below ground. The goal of the present study was to determine the effects of the distance from shore to inland on soil bacterial community composition during wet and dry season. We stud...
متن کاملCoral Skeletons Provide Historical Evidence of Phosphorus Runoff on the Great Barrier Reef
Recently, the inshore reefs of the Great Barrier Reef have declined rapidly because of deteriorating water quality. Increased catchment runoff is one potential culprit. The impacts of land-use on coral growth and reef health however are largely circumstantial due to limited long-term data on water quality and reef health. Here we use a 60 year coral core record to show that phosphorus contained...
